In November 1901, Charles John Reed along with the help of his friend and Professor Joseph W. Richards started this Society. The Society (ECS) is a learned society (professional association) native to the United States that gives support to scientific inquiry in the field of electrochemistry and solid-state science and technology. Its membership consists of more than 8000 scientists and engineers in over 70 countries worldwide who have individual membership, and about 100 asssociations and laboratories that have corporate membership. It holds meetings in the spring and fall of each year. ECS publishes technical journals, proceedings, conference abstracts, and a quarterly news magazine. It comprises of a number of journals. The society's mission is to deposit research widely. Hence, the organization tries to increase the number of articles published as open access.
