Mexican Society of Biotechnology and Bioengineering

Biotechnology integrates disciplines oriented development and innovation of technologies involving the handling of biological material for the production of goods and services.

In this area, the Bioengineering for its part addresses the design, development, optimization and scaling of bioprocesses. Aware of the importance of these areas of knowledge, a group of leading scientists and Mexican researchers founded The Mexican Society of Biotechnology and Bioengineering (SMBB) in 1982  , the SMBB has more than 800 full members, professionals and students, held every two years National Congress of Biotechnology and Bioengineering, in addition to lectures and short courses, and publishes the journal Biotechnology, the official organ of communication. Congress already has a strong academic reputation and is the main newspaper forum to present advances in Mexican research in Biotechnology and Bioengineering.

Major goals of SMBB are as follows:

  • Associating and represent professionals and students interested in the development of Biotechnology and Bioengineering in Mexico. Promoting Biotechnology and Bioengineering in Mexico and publicize the activities of this kind in the country.
  • Promote links and technology transfer between the productive sector of the country, both public and private, and research and development of biotechnology.
  • Foster relationships with other companies and associations of such kind in the country and abroad. Conduct conferences and seminars to publicize scientific and technological partners activities.
  • Publicize the activities referred to in academic institutions, research centres and industry, through the publication of abstracts of the papers presented. Promote the issue of laws, regulations and reforms concerning the exercise of the profession of biotechnologists and bioengineers.
