Gliomas are brain tumors arising from glial cells. 80% of gliomas are malignant in nature. Astrocytoma’s, Oligodendroglia’s, and Ependymomas are the three different types of gliomas.
Epidemiology and Treatment
Gliomas are characterized by headache, nausea, vomiting, speech difficulty, memory disturbance, seizures, and vision problems. Treatment usually includes surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Temozolamide is an effective drug used in chemotherapy for high grade tumors.
In United States, gliomas represent about 30% of brain tumors and 80% of malignant tumors. About 7% of gliomas represent astrocytomas and 76% of gliomas represent Astrocytoma’s and glioblastomas.
