IMIM was founded by the City of Barcelona in 1947, pursuant to a suggestion made by Professor Nauck, Head Tropeninstitut Hamburg Dr. Trias de Bes, then director of the Infectious Diseases Hospital today Hospital del Mar. Its creation was possible thanks to the support of Dr. García Tornel, then Deputy Mayor of Health of the City of Barcelona. The consolidation of the IMIM as a centre for research and teaching was the decade of 60-70, under the direction of doctors Jordi Gras and Amadeo Foz, highlighting Dr. Foz in 1971 to study the outbreak there was that year. The year 1984 was established IMAS as an autonomous municipal health care, which favored the development of a research policy in municipal hospitals and the establishment of a specific budget. The IMIM Foundation, a public entity created in 1992, is responsible for the management of the Institute Hospital del Mar Medical Research, health research institute accredited by the Institute de Salud Carlos III, with 82% of research groups leader by professionals from MAR Health Park, a largely linked to the Autonomous University of Barcelona. On 16 December 2013, the Accreditation Committee of the Institute de Salud Carlos III approved accreditation at the IMIM Health Research Institute, which was ratified by the Secretary of State Research, Development and Innovation for the Order of 17 February 2014. It comprises some seven hundred professionals, of which nineteen hundred researchers are distributed in sixty major research groups integrated into five multidisciplinary programs that organize research IMIM Cancer, directed by Suzanne A. Eccles Epidemiology and Public Health which is led by Jordi Alonso Cardiovascular and inflammatory processes, directed by Miguel López-Botet Biomedical Informatics, directed by Ferran Sanz Neuroscience, directed by Rafael de la Torre A significant part of its budget comes from external competitive financing, which is managed by the Foundation Institute Mar Medical Research.
