Sothebys Institute London is situated in Bedford Square, Bloomsbury (51°31′07″N 0°07′52″W), a well-preserved Georgian square with a private central garden built between 1775 and 1783. Originally conceived as a training program for connoisseurship by Sothebys auction house in 1969, Sothebys Institute of Art aims to provide students with education on the business of art while exploring both the scholarly and practical sides of the art world. In 1995, Sothebys Institute of Art – London was granted the status of an Affiliated Institution of the University of Manchesters Department of Art History and Archaeology. In September 2006, the Institute broadened its course offerings in New York and in 2010 the New York Institute received degree-granting authority from the Regents of the State of New York. The MA in Art Business program at Sotheby’s Institute of Art. Over three semesters of intensive study, students take core courses across three fundamental areas: markets (the context for art business), management (the organizations of art business), and connoisseurship and collecting (the objects of art business). Core courses in these areas encompass art law, marketing and strategy, and finance and accounting, more specialized courses include emerging art markets, valuation, collection management, curating, and art criticism. Students are able to pursue specializations built on two- and three-course sequences, allowing them to cultivate in-depth knowledge in preferred areas. Students are also able (and encouraged) to take courses from outside the Art Business program to broaden to their understanding of the art world. UCEAP programs in London are overseen by the UCEAP Study Center in London. UC and local staff abroad help students integrate into the culture and provide assistance with academics, safety, and other issues.
