Polychlorinated biphenyls

PCBs are toxic synthetic aromatic compounds notorious for their persistence and potential toxicity and were widely used in industry in the twentieth century. PCBs were widely used in flame retardants, dielectric fluids in capacitors, transformers, hydraulic fluids, surface coating, adhesives and dyes. Although the manufacture of PCBs has been banned they remain a problem in the environment because of their persistence.
