Health Academy was established in June 2000 following a merger of the Alpha Center and the Association for Research on Health Services (AHSR). Founded in 1976, the Alpha Center has grown to be recognized as leading resource centres of the health policy of the nation providing research analysis, facilitation, education and training, strategic planning and program management. AHSR was formed in 1981 as a professional non-profit corporation for people and organizations with a commitment to research on health services. The mission of AHSR included consumer education and decision-makers of the importance of research on health services, dissemination of information generated by researchers in health services, securing funding for the field, the provision of networks and professional development opportunities.
Health Academy defines research on health services as a multidisciplinary field of scientific investigation that studies how social factors, financing systems, administrative structures & processes, health technologies & personal behaviours affect to health care, quality & cost of health care and ultimately our health and wellbeing. Health Academy research interests are individuals, family relations, organizations, institutions, communities and populations. Another way to think HSR is presented to the Agency for Health Research and the definition of quality, which was published in February 2002. It states that research on health services examine how people get the access to health care, how much care costs and what happens to patients as a result of this support.
The main objectives of research on health services to identify the most effective ways to organize, manage, fund and provide high quality care; reduce medical errors; and improve patient safety. Health Academy drawing on the strengths of its two predecessors is advancing the field of research on health services and health policy through the transfer of relevant information in the areas of research and policy.
