American Pain Society

The American Pain Society (APS) was established on March 6, 1977. The idea of establishing this association started at an Ad Hoc Advisory Committee meeting in Chicago. The discussion was about formation of a National Pain Organization. The members of the meeting wanted to bring about a significant increase in public awareness on the aspects of pain management and research and also on the need to establish a national organization of pain professionals. They also focussed on the existence of the Eastern and Western USA societies of the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) and the associations’ growth. 28 interested pain professionals from across USA were invited by the founders, Dr. John J. Bonica and B. Berthold Wolff in order to cover a wide disciplinary range, to the Chicago meeting. The association has numerous organized committees with particular areas of focus, like research, governance, education, and membership that regularly report to the board of directors.
