EACMFS was established by a group of European surgeons in 1970 that were keen to take forward the specialty. It is has become the most eminent and highly respected professional group for the specialty in Europe and also has a high profile in other parts of the World. The objectives of the Association are to promote cranio-maxillo-facial surgery both in theory and practice and aims to establish uniform training requirements for the specialty in Europe and encourage these worldwide. The main aim was to endeavor to ensure that specialist training in oral and maxillo-facial surgery was based on a solid foundation of dual medical and dental qualifications and core training in surgery.
Responsibility for harmonization of qualifications and training later passed to the European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS) Section of Oro-Maxillo-Facial Surgery & Stomatology which published a Charter on Training of medical Specialists in OMFS in 1994. With the establishment of the European Board for OMFS (EBOMFS) the RQ (Recognition of Qualification) assessments were introduced in 1996 leading to the Fellow of the EBOMFS qualification.
