Barebacking is a sexual behavior in which people, usually gay or bisexual men, intentionally engage in Unprotected Anal Intercourse (UAI). A growing body of research in public health and the social sciences is focused on improving our understanding of the barebacking phenomenon among men who have sex with men (MSM), which was first described in the gay press in the mid-1990s. These empirical works have investigated emic understandings of barebacking , the role of the Internet in its proliferation, the prevalence of barebacking in a variety of gay and bisexual populations, as well as psychosocial (e.g., coping with social stressors) and behavioral correlates (e.g., substance abuse) related to its practice.
