Schizophrenia is a heterogeneous neurobiological disorder that affects 24 million people worldwide. It is associated with a multitude of symptoms including hallucinations, delusions, affective dysregulation, motivational decline, motor abnormalities, and social withdrawal. Because of the heterogeneity of schizophrenia, a variety of structural abnormalities have been documented in schizophrenia, differing based on the subsyndromes of the illness. Disturbances in neuroplasticity have been associated with the cognitive deficits expressed in schizophrenia and reduced Brain Derived Neurotropic Factor.
