Atherosclerosis of coronary arteries develops and progresses at different rates, and it may manifest clinically at different stages of coronary stenosis. Thrombus formation within a coronary vessel is the precipitating event in acute coronary syndromes (unstable angina, myocardial infarction or sudden cardiac death), as shown in angiographic and pathologic studies.
