Influenza Virus

Influenza virus infects 5–15% of the population during a typical influenza season. The annual influenza epidemic worldwide results in about 3–5 million cases of severe illness and about 250 000–500 000 deaths (WHO Influenza Fact Sheet 221). ortality is high in vulnerable populations, which include the elderly, very young children and those with underlying disease conditions compared with normal population. Influenza infection causes a cascade of inflammatory response and can exacerbate underlying disease conditions, including Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) and diabetes, and can also lead to viral pneumonia, or a co-infection with other viruses or bacteria
