Haemochromatosis is a genetic (inherited) disorder causing the body to absorb too much iron from the diet. The excess iron is then stored in various organs, mainly the liver.Haemochromatosis is an inherited condition caused by a faulty gene called HFE, which allows a person to absorb too much iron from food. Normally, the body only absorbs as much as it needs. The excess iron may also be stored in the pancreas, heart, testes/ovaries, skin and joints. The main treatment is the regular removal of blood, which helps to remove the excess iron from the body. If treatment is started early enough and before complications occur then the outlook for people with hemochromatosis is very good. The diagnosis includes blood test, Liver biopsy, and heart scan.Treatment is lifelong. It involves having blood taken out of the body, just like being a blood donor.
