Sleep medicine is a medical sub-specialty that deals with diagnosis and therapy of sleep disturbances and disorders. Since mid-20th century, research has provided enough knowledge about sleep-wake functioning and answered many questions. The rapidly evolving field has become a recognized medical subspecialty in some countries. Dental sleep medicine has qualified for board certification in few countries. Properly organized, minimum 12-month, postgraduate training programs are still being defined in the United States. In some countries, the researchers of sleep as well as the physicians who treat patients may be the same people. The first clinic for sleep in the United States was established in the 1970s by interested physicians and technicians; the first task of study was diagnosis and treatment of obstructive sleep apnea.
