A series of electron transport reactions across the membrane of mitochondrion for the generation of ATP is termed as the oxidative phosphorylation. Electrons are transferred from electron donors to electron acceptors such as oxygen, in redox reactions. These redox reactions release energy in the form of ATP. The NADH and succinate generated in the citric acid cycle are oxidized, releasing energy to power the ATP synthase which converts ADP to ATP.
