Inflammation is a process by which the white blood cells and biochemicals protect us from infection from foreign invaders such as bacteria and viruses. It is the body's first attempt at self-protection; the aim being to remove harmful stimuli, including pathogens, irritants or damaged cells - and begin the healing process. Initially, it is beneficial but, sometimes inflammation could cause further inflammation; it can become self-perpetuating. More inflammation is created in response to the existing inflammation.
