Power Electronics Group Journals

The list of the power electronics group journals exists for the discussion and dissemination of computational and analytical methods in electrical and electronic engineering. The main emphasis of papers should be on methods and new techniques, or the application of existing techniques in a novel way. Power electronics is not only strictly binds to electronic devices but also expanded to marine science and biosciences. In portable devices, DC-DC converters control the amount of power transferred from the input battery supply to the load. Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) and Pulse Frequency Modulation (PFM) generate pulses to control the switches in these converters which regulate the power supplied to the outputs at different load values. Conventionally, current sensing techniques with analog devices or processors are employed to change the mode from PWM to PFM with the change in load conditions. However, they require an extra power supply for their operation which is not feasible in low power devices. This paper proposes a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) based approach to switch from PWM to PFM mode through a voltage sensing technique. The results show that the proposed technique increases the efficiency due to the use of the FPGA device. Additionally, transferring from PWM to PFM reduces the losses compared to the conventional PWM based converters.
