Soil mechanics comes under engineering mechanics which describes behavior of soils. Soil mechanics is different from fluid mechanics and solid mechanics. Heterogeneous mixture of fluids and particles made up of soil but soil may also contain liquids organic solids, and gasses and other matter. For analysis in geotechnical engineering soil mechanics provides the theoretical basis. Geotechnical engineering comes under civil engineering and engineering geology. The three basic soil types are clayey, loamy and sandy soils. The important soil types found in the basin are sand, loam, clay and their combinations such as sandy loam, silty clay etc.
