Aldosterone is produced by the adrenal cortex. It helps in the regulation of blood pressure by acting on the distal tubules and collecting ducts of the nephrons which increases the re-absorption of ions and water in the kidneys. This leads to the secretion of potassium, conservation of sodium, increased blood pressure and retention of water. Aldosterone can be pathogenic if not regulated properly. It may also contribute to the development and progression of renal and cardiovascular diseases.

Scholarly peer review is the process of subjecting an author's scholarly work, research, or ideas to the scrutiny of others who are experts in the same field, before a paper describing this work is published in a journal. The work may be accepted, considered acceptable with revisions, or rejected. Peer review requires a community of experts in a given (narrowly defined) field, who are qualified and able to perform reasonably impartial review.
