Allal Boutajangout

Associate Professor New York University
Biography
Dr. Allal is currently appointed as Research Associate Professor at Department of Psychiatry and Department of Neuroscience and Physiology. He got his M.Sc.Pharm. (Cand. Pharm.) Pharmacy from University of Iceland in the year 1990.
In 1997, he was honored with  Ph.D. Pharmacology from Loyola University Chicago Medical Center Maywood, Illinois. His Postdoctoral Training held during 1997-2000 as Assistant Research Scientist at Department of Pathology and Neurology from New York University School of Medicine. In 1990, he was certified with full registration as a Pharmacist in Iceland. Continuing with his research work, he got appointed as Research Assistant Professor of Neurology at New York University School of Medicine. From 2001 up to 2008, he practiced as Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Pathology, tenure-track. New York University School of Medicine. And presently he is serving as Professor of Neuroscience and Physiology, and Psychiatry at New York University School of Medicine.
Research Interest
His research is primarily on age-related degenerative diseases that are characterized by protein conformational changes. It involves studying this alteration, its consequences at the molecular- and system level, the factors that are involved in this process, as well as therapeutic and diagnostic targeting of this pathological pathway.

    Research Highlights are
Pioneered the use of immunotherapy and related imaging probes targeting pathological tau protein as found in AD and related tauopathies.
Initiated the use of modified Aβ derivatives as potentially safer immunotherapy for Alzheimer’s disease.  These experiments commenced prior to the encephalitis cases that were observed in the first clinical trial on Aβ immunotherapy, and those adverse reactions support our approach.
Demonstrated for the first time that active and passive immunization targeting the prion protein delayed the onset of prion disease in mice.
First approach to detect amyloid plaques in living brains.
First report showing the effectiveness of chelators as potential therapy for prion diseases.
Showed the therapeutic feasibility of β-sheet breaker peptides in vivo.
Demonstrated that Aβ can lead to tau pathology at distant site.
