Assessing Perceptual Sensitivity of Respiratory Load Using Constant Airway Resistance

Breathlessness is a complex subjective sensation that is a common symptom of cardio-respiratory disease, it is difficult to quantify but it is necessary to do so that patient reposnse to therapy can be assessed. The subjective difficulty of distress in breathing is difficult to acurately quantify, yet breathlessness is closely linked to chest disease with airway obstruction, and is therefore a common characteristic in patients. This can be due to permanent airway obstruction such as with COPD or recurrent reversible obstruction caused by airway hyperresponsiveness such as with asthma.
