Histological Validation of Heart Slices as a Model in Cardiac Research

Vibratome-cut heart slices is an emerging model in cardiac research, particularly in studying functional integration of transplanted donor stem cells with host cardiomyocytes. Myocardial regeneration by stem cell transplantation is a new possible therapy to treat heart failure. For the success of this strategy, it is vital for transplanted donor-derived cardiomyocytes to functionally integrate into the host myocardium. Particularly, formation of appropriate intercellular communication via gap junctions, the structures responsible for the electrical coupling, with host cardiomyocytes is essential for donor-derived cardiomyocytes to contract in a synchronous manner without producing arrhythmias.
