Optical Coherence Tomography & Optic Nerve Disease

Optic nerve is the major nerve that carries the neural impulses from retina to the brain thus helps in the formation of images. Optic nerve diseases are of two types: genetic or abnormal development and acquired diseases. Defects of the optic nerve will affect vision in both eyes. Major optic nerve disorders includes congenital optic atrophy, Leber's Hereditary Optic Neuropathy, Optic Nerve Hypoplasia, Optic Neuritis, Acquired Optic Atrophy, Glaucoma etc. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a medical imaging technique that allows imaging of optic nerve, optic nerve fibers, retina etc. Recent scientific studies proves that spectral domain OCT became available as a major tool in diagnosis of optic nerve disorders.
