Maintaining an optimal body composition, including optimal Bone Mineral Density levels, muscle strength, and muscle volume, during the premenopausal years is important to reduce the risk of osteoporosis and subsequent fractures during the postmenopausal years. While pharmacologic therapy is usually contraindicated in premenopausal women, lifestyle modification is almost always recommended.
