Will Pharmacogenomics Take the Pain Out of Pain Medication?

According to recent data briefs from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in 2007, pain-reliever overdose killed more people in the USA than cocaine and heroin combined. Since 1999, deaths among women from prescription painkiller overdose have increased nearly 400 %. Over 40% of these deaths are attributed to one class of pain-relievers, the opioids. In 2011, opioid overdose killed more Americans than traffic fatalities. Data published on the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA) website show a steady increase in the number of opioid prescriptions over the past two decades.
