The aquatic environment with its water quality is considered the main factor controlling the state of health and diseases in both cultured and wild fishes. Pollution of heavy metals in aquatic ecosystem is growing at an alarming rate and has become an important worldwide problem. Increase in population, urbanization, industrialization and agricultural practices have further aggravated the situation. As heavy metal cannot be degraded, they are deposited, assimilated or incorporated in water, sediments and aquatic animals and thus causing heavy metal pollution in water bodies. Therefore, heavy metals can be bio accumulated and biomagnified via the food chain and finally assimilated by human consumers resulting in health risks. As a consequence, fish are often used as indicators of heavy metals contamination in the aquatic ecosystem because they occupy high trophic levels and are important food sources.
