The development of a child’s language abilities and particularly their aptitude to use those abilities in service of social interaction, i.e., social communication, are key to successful functioning in the world. Social communication requires a complex combination of abilities wherein a language user accesses and amalgamates information from a number of different biological mechanisms and psychological and social knowledge bases. To engage in social communication a child must integrate verbal and non-verbal cues with inferences about their conversational partners’ social status, their knowledge and mental states, as well as with cues from the physical environment in which the exchange takes place.
