Intra-abdominal adhesions affect the quality of life and increase the burden on the meagre health care resources in low income countries. Re-operations are made more difficult, with an increased risk of iatrogenic bowel injury during surgery. Furthermore, repeated laparotomy and adhesiolysis triggers-off yet more adhesion formation. Consensus for the ideal management of ASBO has yet to be reached. At Mulago Hospital, most patients with ASBO without complications undergo conservative management for longer periods (a mean of 6 days, ranging from 1 to 29 days) than the estimated standard duration of 48 to 72 hours.
