Internal Medicine or general medicine is a medical specialty that deals with the Prevention of adult diseases, their diagnosis and treatment. Physicians who are specialized in internal medicine are called internists, or physicians. Internists are mainly skilled in the management of patients who have undifferentiated or multi-system disease processes. Internists may play a major role in teaching and research by caring for hospitalized and ambulatory patients. Internists should not be confused with "interns", who are doctors in their first year of residency training because they are qualified physicians with postgraduate training in internal medicine.
