Osteomyelitis

Osteomyelitis is a bone infection. It is caused due to microorganisms that infect the bone and the microorganisms can spread to the bone through the blood stream or infection from the nearby tissue. It a rare condition but it can become serious because it can spread to other parts of the body via bloodstream. In children osteomyelitis generally infect longer bones of the legs and upper arm. The infection can also occur because of some bone surgery in which the metal rods are introduced in the bones. The persons with weak immune system are at higher risk of developing osteomyelitis because the microorganisms can easily gain entry in the blood stream and infect the bones. The symptoms of osteomyelitis include fever, pain, rashes or redness and swelling in the area of infection. Various diagnostic methods are there for the diagnosis of osteomyelitis like bone scan, bone x-ray and MRI of the bone. There are various treatments for the osteomyelitis like antibiotics that kill the infection causing microorganism or if the infection is severe then the dead bone is removed so that it will not infect the surrounding tissues. Scholarly peer review is the process of subjecting an author's scholarly work, research, or ideas to the scrutiny of others who are experts in the same field, before a paper describing this work is published in a journal. The work may be accepted, considered acceptable with revisions, or rejected. Peer review requires a community of experts in a given (narrowly defined) field, who are qualified and able to perform reasonably impartial review.
