Thiamin

Thiamin, also known as vitamin B1, is a water soluble vitamin found in moderate to high quantities in whole and enriched grain products, lean meats (especially lean pork), organ meats, eggs, nuts, and seeds. Thiamin is found in the body in three different phosphate ester forms: Thiamin Monophosphate (TMP), Thiamin Pyrophosphate (TPP), and Thiamin Triphosphate (TTP), with TPP acting as the metabolically active coenzyme form. Thiamin is essential for the metabolism of lipids, amino acids, and carbohydrates as well as activation of ion channels in nerve membranes, production of pentose sugars and NADPH. Thiamin deficiency results in a condition called beriberi classified as dry beriberi affecting the nervous system and wet beriberi affects the cardiovascular system.
