Rhinitis is irritation and inflammation of the mucous membrane inside the nose. It may be allergic or non-allergic. Allergic rhinitis, also known as hay fever or pollinosis is caused by an allergen, such as pollen, dust, mould or flakes of skin from certain animals. Nonallergic rhinitis occurs when blood vessels in your nose expand (dilate), filling the nasal lining with blood and fluid.
