Allergen immunotherapy, also called desensitization aims at patients suffering from allergies. It is a long-term treatment which decreases allergic symptoms by increasing tolerance to the specific allergen and involves the repeated administration of allergenic extracts to the patients either subcutaneously or sublingually for the treatment of allergic respiratory diseases. Allergen immunotherapy improves the existing symptoms of allergic rhinitis, conjunctivitis, asthma or stinging insect allergy. Allergen immunotherapy is the cost-effective adjunctive treatment in modifying the existing disease state. This immunotherapy is associated with a shift from Th2 to Th1 immune responses, and the production of T regulatory cells that reduce the immune response to relevant allergens.
