Inflammation and oxidative stress are important pathophysiological features of asthma that can be verified both in airways and lung parenchyma. NO release by nitric oxide synthases activation contribute to the oxidative stress, amplifying the deleterious and harmful effects on lungs. oral tolerance induces a shift Th1/Th2 and oxidative stress activation in airways and distal lung of animals with chronic pulmonary allergic inflammation. NO can interact with superoxides, resulting in the formation of the potent oxidant peroxynitrite, leading to lipid peroxidation and consequent generation of isoprostanes, which are markers for activation of the oxidative stress pathway.
