Thoracotomy is one of the most painful surgical stimuli currently practiced. Inadequate management of post-thoracotomy pain can increase patients discomfort and it is often associated with postoperative pulmonary and cardiac complications. Thoracic epidural analgesia was considered to be the most effective method of pain control and it remains the gold standard to treat post-thoracotomy pain; however, in the last few years evidences have suggested that paravertebral nerve block can be at least as effective as epidural analgesia for analgesia in thoracotomy.
