Semen Collection and Seminal Quality in Primates

There is relatively a lot of knowledge about sperm parameters such as normal rage of motility, morphology and concentration for livestock and companion animals. However, there are still large gaps of knowledge concerning normal semen parameters for wild animals such as primates.Such knowledge would be beneficial in assisted reproduction efforts involving artificial insemination and in-vitro fertilization. It would also aid in identifying sub-fertile males which may require intervention before being used as a breeding male. To further guard against the extinction of a given endangered species, cryopreservation of sperm is a helpful tool but only if representative good quality semen samples are preserved that will be capable of surviving the freezing-thawing cycle and subsequently fertilizing oocytes and producing viable embryos.
