Cellulitis and erysipelas: skin and soft tissue infections

Cellulitis and erysipelas are common skin and soft tissue infections seen in both primary care and acute hospital settings locally and internationally with an estimated incidence of 16.4-24.6/1000 personyears. Cellulitis is generally considered synonymous with the term ‘erysipelas’, although they can be differentiated according to the tissues affected. While erysipelas affects the upper dermis, including the superficial lymphatics, cellulitis involves the deeper dermis, and subcutaneous fat. The most common causative organism is Streptococcus sp., and the leg is the most commonly affected site. The infections that result are considered paucibacillary, and carry an excellent prognosis.
