ow back pain (LBP) is a rising health care issue across the globe , effecting about 80% of the population worldwide and imposing an economic burden of at least $86 billion annually. LBP is defined as discomfort in the lumbosacral region of the back that may or may not radiate to the legs, hips, and buttocks. LBP is commonly categorized as acute (6-weeks or shorter), subacute (up to 3 months) or chronic (> 3 months) stages based on the duration of symptoms. Chronic low back pain, although only accounting for 5% of individuals with LBP, represents 75% of the total treatment costs.
