Hypertension is a major cardiovascular burden that has been estimated to cause 7.1 million premature deaths and 45 % of the disease burden. However, it remains inadequately managed everywhere, and in spite of the large number of antihypertensive medications, most people in developing countries have poor access to modern health-care and cannot afford these drugs due to cost.
