HIV and Antiretroviral Therapy on Chromosomal Radiosensitivity

Antiretroviral Therapy is not only used in treatment of HIV but also in prevention. ART has led to an improvement in survival of HIV infected patients. Some of the infected patients will develop cancer during course of infection and they require radiation therapy. HIV positive patients with cancer presented with adverse side effects of radiotherapy and elevated chromosomal radiosensitivity. Dr. Ans Baeyens conducted a study to identify the chromosomal radio sensitivity in HIV patients taking ART and individual without ART. They have found that HIV patients taking ART can lead to enhanced chromosomal radiosensitivity than HIV positive individuals.
