Effects of Probiotic on Zebrafish Reproduction
According to the World Health Organization probiotic bacteria are defined as ‘live microorganisms which when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit on the host’. Microbial products, such as probiotics, are considered valid alternatives to the prophylactic use of chemicals in aquaculture practices. Recent studies have clearly demonstrated the beneficial effects of these feed additives on immune system modulation, stress tolerance and growth rate of farmed fish but the effects of these nutraceuticals on reproduction and gamete quality, is still poorly studied.
