The use of simulation technology to teach workforce skills may have begun in early 1930s when the Link Trainer was used to familiarize pilots with instrumentation. Simulation was incorporated into medical education in the 1960s with the use of Resusci Anne to train caregivers to perform rescue breathing and closed-chest cardiac massage. Modern simulators are currently used in a variety of formats for medical education and professional development. Mastery learning has been employed to overcome poor retention of skills, but it is unclear what level of technological fidelity is necessary to achieve skill enhancement. The use of widely available technical-fidelity simulation can overcome declines in resuscitation skills when utilized in a mastery-learning program that emphasizes psychological fidelity.
