Gram-negative bacteria are a class of bacteria that do not retain the crystal violet stain used in the Gram staining. In these bacteria a thin peptidoglycan layer of their cell wall is sandwiched between an inner cytoplasmic cell membrane and a bacterial outer membrane. Gram negative bacteria deploy their periplasm to secrete bacterial outer membrane vesicles for trafficking bacterial biochemicals to target cells in their environment. OMVs also carry the lipopolysaccharide initiating disease process in their host.
