Vestibular Rehabilitation: Cawthorne-Cooksey Exercises

Vestibular rehabilitation therapy (VRT) is a precise form of physical therapy designed to habituate symptoms and substitution for various aspects of deficits related to a wide variety of balance disorders. VRT is effective in improving the functional deficits and subjective symptoms resulting from unilateral and bilateral peripheral vestibular hypo function as well as from central balance disorders. Vestibular rehabilitation is exercise-based programs which include Cawthorne-Cooksey Exercises, designed by a specialized physical therapist, to reduce dizziness-related symptoms and improve balance. Dizziness often occurs as a result of an inner ear (vestibular) problem. Inner ear dizziness, called vertigo, results in a feeling of spinning or movement of your environment. The steps in Cawthorne-Cooksey exercises include relaxing the neck and shoulder muscles, training the eyes to move independently of the head, practising good balance in everyday situations, practicing the head movements that cause dizziness (to help the development of vestibular compensation), improving general co-ordination, and encouraging natural unprompted movement.
