thionamide is an isonicotinic acid derivative of thioamide class. It is the second line orally administered drug used in the treatment of clinical tuberculosis that has failed to respond to adequate first line therapy. Ethionamide is often combined with other anti tuberculous agents for the treatment of multidrug resistant organisms. Ethionamide is active against tubercle bacilli that are growing with in human macrophages.
