Cerebral palsy is a neuromuscular disorder caused by an injury to the fetal or infant brain that affects the development of movement and posture and causes activity limitations. The motor disorders of CP are often accompanied by disturbances of sensation, perception, cognition, communication, and behavior; by epilepsy; and by secondary musculoskeletal problems. This consensus definition not only acknowledges the initial static or non-progressive injury to the immature brain but also recognizes the resulting dynamic and evolving medical, developmental, and social issues that this disruption in normal brain development creates throughout the life span.
