Stem Cell Transplantation Pros & Cons

Stem cells are a class of undifferentiated cells that are able to differentiate into specialized cell types. Depending on the source of stem cells, stem cell transplant is also known as bone marrow transplant, peripheral blood stem cell transplant or an umbilical cord blood transplant. Stem cells are very old blood cells in the bone marrow that develop into red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. The stem cells can be of two types based on their source of origin: Embryonic Stem Cells (Embryos formed during the blastocyst phase of embryological development) and adult stem cells (stem cells formed from adult tissue). Healthy stem cells can be transplanted in an organism’s body to replace damaged or diseased stem cells. Such process of transplantation of cells in the body of an organism is termed as Stem cell transplantation. Such transplantation is recommended as a treatement option for various diseases. Sometimes genetic diseases that involve blood are also treated by stem cells transplantation
