Many African states are currently experiencing tensions and wars. Where it is possible to save lives, massive bone and tissue loss cause severe physical disabilities. Africa is absolutely in demand for therapies that can reconstruct/replace wounded tissues. The United States has founded a number of initiatives aimed at employing tissue engineering approaches for the treatment of war injuries, such as the Orthopaedic Extremity Trauma Research Program (OETRP) within the Department of Defense, the Armed Forces Institute for Regenerative Medicine (a consortium of academic research institutions) and other programs within the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases. Africa needs and can offer a valuable environment to investigate and address basic and applied research questions of tissue engineering. The exploitation of both the existing and the still unexplored macro- and micro-environment will be needed for tissue engineering to enrich the field in the next decade and lead the discovery of new treatments.
