The axillary lymph nodes are staged to aid in determining both the stage and the appropriate therapy of patients. In fact, the status of the axillary lymph node is the most important predictor of outcome in breast cancer. When breast cancer patients present with palpable axillary lymph nodes that are suspicious for cancer metastases, these patients are staged clinically according to the AJCC system. '
